VEA announced its 2023 legislative agenda initiating legislation to improve the Virginia stipend incentive for NBCTs is among the important items included. We support legislation to scale the initial and continuing state supplement and advocate adding support to help educators pay for the certification process. How has being a union member helped you? Being in the union helped me become a better classroom teacher through instruction and professional development, classroom management, and networking with educators across the city, state, and nation.
If you could give 1 piece of advice to someone in education, what would it be? Never lose sight of what it is like to be a student. Educators must remain aware of the pressures students face daily and the importance of setting realistic deadlines. Consider taking a class or attending a professional conference, like VEA’s EPIC, to refresh your educator toolbox and take on the student role so you can see learning through their eyes.
According to a poll conducted by Virginia Commonwealth University, 66% of Virginians say public schools do not have enough funding to meet their needs.
